Purpose
To provide structured, safe, and effective instruction of the physical (hands-on) skills portion of CPI training.
Description
This procedure ensures staff are equipped with the necessary physical intervention techniques to manage crisis situations safely. This SOP applies to all staff required to maintain CPI certification or recertification and who have completed the prerequisite online instruction.

Pre-screen participants for medical or physical limitations
Confirm all attendees have completed their online modules
Confirm all attendees have their CPI Book & Blue Card

Procedure Overview
Welcome and Safety Review (20 minutes)

Disengagement Skills (60 minutes)
Repeat each level skill 3-5 times, rotating partners after each level. Remind attendees to use their verbal de-escalation skills in conjunction with disengagement and holds. Remind participants of the impact of the surprise factor and the considerations that are necessary.

Holding Skills (60 minutes)
Rotate roles within the group, allowing each person to experience each staff member’s role (left/right) and the role of the individual in crisis. Remind participants of the impact of the surprise factor and the considerations that are necessary.

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
Reiterate importance of using skills only when necessary
Remind participants of documentation/reporting requirements
Collect attendance/sign-out
Sign Blue Cards and record Blue Card #
Distribute post-training evaluations (if required)
Offer info about accessing refresher training or support
Remind attendees to review their workbook as much as possible to keep information fresh.
