Chromebook Keyboard Settings:

Sometimes a student or even a staff member will accidentally hit a weird combination of keys on a chromebook and it will seem like it's typing gibberish. This is a common problem with a simple solution!

Change The Keyboard Layout:

  1. Turn on the chromebook and open them menu at the bottom-right of the screen.
  2. You should see an option for Keyboard and it should say US underneath it.
  3. If it says something else, click on Keyboard and choose US or INTL.
These are the US and US International keyboards respectively. There are very few differences between US and INTL, but they do exist. It is recommended you choose US, but you may not notice a difference if you accidentally change it to INTL.

If, when you or a student log into the chromebook, the problem persists, try checking back at the keyboard. Sometimes settings like this are saved to a profile and will need to be changed again once the profile has been logged in.

Shortcut: ctrl + space bar. This shortcut will cycle through the keyboard languages allowing you to quickly toggle through the available choices. It is likely that this combination of keys is what caused this problem in the first place.
